The fossil records in numbers

The map is built from a snapshot of the Paleobiology Database taken on 2026-10-12. The database returned 22,667 records for dinosaurs. We removed 2,326 footprint records, 994 egg records, 462 records of Mesozoic birds and 948 records dated after the Cretaceous, which leaves 17,937 non-avian dinosaur finds with map coordinates. 986 are marked as approximate because the database gives only a rough position for them. Together they cover 1,298 genera and 93 countries.

Birds are left out. Birds are technically living dinosaurs, but this map covers the non-avian dinosaurs, the ones that died out about 66 million years ago.
