How to read the dots. Each dot is one find recorded in the Paleobiology Database, coloured by the period of its rocks. Finds marked approximate have only a rough position in the database, so the dot can sit some way from the real site.

The Jurassic on the map

The Jurassic is the age of the giant long-necked sauropods, of armoured Stegosaurus and of big meat-eaters such as Allosaurus. The single continent was slowly splitting apart, and the seas flooding between the pieces left many of the rocks that now hold fossils.

The Paleobiology Database records 2,200 dinosaur finds that sit wholly in the Jurassic, from 294 genera. That is 12% of all the finds on the map. A further set of finds has an age range that spans two periods, so it is not counted here; the map shows them in grey.

The most recorded Jurassic genera are Allosaurus (146), Camarasaurus (138) and Stegosaurus (84). The countries with the most Jurassic finds are United States (1,306), China (358) and United Kingdom (254). The age slider lets you compare this period with the others.
